July 16, 2008

Happy Birthday this week to Connie Ryan(July 17th), John Palmer and Leher Pathak(July 20) and Mark Drumm(July21). Belated wishes to Linda McKee(July 15).
Sorry that some of you missed the General Meeting on Sunday. We had a glorious time with great leadership from Jay Steele, and a fun party planned by Gary Daum and K. Michael Riley. Thanks to Bobby Giruado and Doug Kerr who did the major clean-up. The results of the name change possibilities are the following: Bay Area Musical theater, Bay Area Musicals, SDG(acronym only), and South Bay Musical Theater. The final decision will be made at the January meeting. The top choices for the season were FIORELLO, A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM, and if released, THE PRODUCERS. That means absolutely nothing; however, it is nice to hear the feelings of the members. The Board may have other ideas. If you are interested in producing a show, please contact Jay. Our General Meeting will probably be on Tuesday, January 6, at the Theater. The season plus the name change will be announced and chosen at that meeting. Also our general election of Board members will be held. It is always an exciting event, so mark it on your calendars now but only in pencil.
Lots of auditions this weekend with casting to be announced shortly. West Valley will be picking the boys for PLAID TIDINGS( the continuation of FOREVER PLAID) and Tabard will announce the cast for CROWNS. A very busy Diane Milo directs both. However, she still had time to make the SDG meeting. Thanks Diane. Rehearsals are now underway for RAGTIME with new cast members joining or dropping every day. A word to those who audition, decide whether you are going to commit before the audition, not after you have been cast. You have taken a spot that someone else may have had. Look at your calendar first and then commit, not afterwards. You have taken up time from the staff and wasted your valuable time also. Think before you jump. It is your reputation at hand and it WILL follow you. The bottom line, don't drop out. Enough said.
Caught the Saturday performance of THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE at Broadway by the Bay. They always do good shows. It was a carbon copy of the show last year done by Diablo Light Opera since they used the same costumes, same sets, and same staging. But it was still entertaining. The orchestra sure was good. Next up for them is INTO THE WOODS.
CASTING NEWS: Mindy Pedlar will play the Mother Abbess in THE SOUND OF MUSIC for Western Stage. It opens soon. Don't forget the good-bye party for Chip and Geri Sauls on August 4 at the Theater on the Square. They soon will be on their way to North Carolina. Kristen and Dean Scott were recently on the RACHEL RAY SHOW talking about their special candy.
Playing its final weekend is GREASE at the Saratoga Theater. For the reviews , check out www. Artsopolis.com . Ted Kopulos will be doing his OUT OF MY TRUNK, OUT OF MY MIND musical review on Friday, July 25th, and Sunday, July 27th, at West Valley College. He has a wonderful cast and of course Ted will be there to narrate. It is always amazing how talented Mr. Kopulos is. Featured will be Lisa Burich, Brad Handshy, Mary Melnick, Robin Melnick, Barbara Reynolds, Tim Reynolds, Geri Sauls, Jay Steele, Molly Thornton, and Aaron Weisberg. Ted has added some new stuff also. The same night, Foothill College will open THE PAJAMA GAME featuring Doug Baird, Mike Rhone, Reggie Reynolds, Bill Ereneta, and Karen DeHart. We are all going on Saturday, July 26, if you would like to join us. A busy weekend indeed. SYLVIA, with Leslie Hardy and George Mauro opens on July 18 in Pacifica.. Leslie is giving it a "Thumbs Up" and having a wonderful time. It is a very funny play. Other July shows include THE FULL MONTY with Mark Drumm showing all and HAIR with Noel Carey showing all. Take your pick. ALTAR BOYS opens later this month for San Jose Stage with CJ Blankenship (not showing all) and Cody Scott as one of the understudies. Looks like he is continuing to follow his mom and dad into the business. Next week, I finally see THE DROWSY CHAPERON. People have told me that the Man in the Chair was written about me. I will check.
Until then I will see you "On Down the Road!"
